Welcome to the website of the McAllen International Orchid Society (MIOS) Journal. The MIOS Journal is a monthly print publication devoted to the study of orchids. It includes articles that are scientific, horticultural, historic, and popular in nature. The unifying theme is orchids. This website contains only a selection of articles from the printed journal.

The MIOS itself is physically located in McAllen, TX and conducts monthly meetings. However, it has corresponding members worldwide, including Canada, Mexico, South Africa, and the United States. The society welcomes new members, wherever they may reside.

MIOS Meeting Notice

The next public meeting will be held on Sunday, July 13th at 2:30 p.m. at the Pecan Campus of the South Texas College in McAllen, TX (map). It will be held in the upstairs classroom of the STC Library. Subsequent meetings are projected to be 3 August, 7 September, 5 October, and 2 November.

Society Membership

The MIOS's annual membership fee for the year 2008 is twenty-five dollars U.S. ($25) and includes twelve monthly issues of the MIOS Journal (ISSN 1934-4880). Memberships begun mid-year will still receive all journal issues for that year. If interested in joining the society, please contact the MIOS for more information.


Orchid Manuscripts

The MIOS Journal is always seeking new authors to write articles and book reviews on any aspect of orchids, be it scientific, horticultural, or popular. If interested in writing for the journal, or if you wish to submit an article for possible publication, please contact the editor.

The Family Orchidaceae is distributed from tropical to alpine areas of the world with over 35,000 species belonging to 800 genera. 166 genera with 1141 species are represented in India (Bhanwra et al., 2006), of which 240 species are distributed in Uttarakhand state (Jalal 2007). Most of the orchid species are facing different degrees of threats to their survival due to habitat loss, the fragmentation of populations, genetic drift, and anthropogenic pressures. To protect these species in their natural habitats, the government of India has imposed a ban on the commercial exploitation of orchids.

Some may be bought for a little over fifty five dollars, while other volumes are in the 120 dollar range. When the set is completed, these books are projected to treat the entire orchid family at the family, tribe, and subtribe levels, and particularly at the genus level.
